Biltong is a form of naturally dried, cured meat which originated in South Africa. The natives of the country dried and salted the hunted meat for preservation.
The meat cured by hanging and salting. This ensured that the benefits of the meat could be enjoyed for weeks and taken on journeys.
When Europeans arrived they adopted this form of curing. Meat, like beef, venison, ostrich and kudu were marinated in vinegars and other herbs and spices to enhance flavour.
Curing of meat is not a new thing, it has been around for hundreds of years and there are many different techniques and processes. The crafting of biltong uses only authentic natural spices such as salt, vinegars and herbs. Biltong is regularly mistaken as jerky. Jerky is also a form of cured meat, however, it is usually made from leaner cuts of meat and is smoked and dehydrated with a lot of salt, msg and sugar – making it a far less healthy choice.

“When I think back to my childhood, what I remember most is my family, friends and fresh air. While I played outside – barefoot under the African sun – my family made truly artisanal biltong using natural spice blends, recipes and traditional processes handed down from generation to generation. Slowly but surely, I inherited my family’s profound passion for producing real, authentic food with a healthy respect for the environment.
The Original Biltong Company has stayed true to this tradition, because we believe the best tasting biltong is made from simple, natural, delicious ingredients. It begins with the quality of our grass-fed British and Irish beef, our authentic drying process and our secret blend of herbs and spices. And it ends once that meat has been perfectly cured, hand selected, sliced, and packed for freshness.
Each bite is a proud tribute to the Holtshausen families, who came before us, and who never cease to inspire our passion, our product, our life.”
